I discovered photography when I was 19. I was at UC Santa Barbara, studying pre-med, and not feeling connected in any way to what I was studying.
I took photography as an elective course, and was immediately taken in. After successfully tackling the technical joys of first time photography, I started to really look at the work of photographers whom I admired. I found in the work of people like Bill Owens, Diane Arbus and William Eggleston that there were others out there who questioned normalcy; and it was great to discover that you can have a voice with photography. I went to Art Center College of Design for photography, and graduated in 1993. Through my time at Art Center, and the few years following my graduation, I weathered the trends of cross processing and fish eye lenses, and continued to nurture my connection with photography that I felt was timeless in its beauty. Now, 14 years later, I shoot for myself often, and I run a Photography Agency out of my guest house. I find great joy in cultivating and nurturing the work of photographers who I feel have a vision. I thoroughly enjoy the creative process - and I get to go through it daily with multiple artists on many different projects. I am thankful to be able to make a living working with creative people, and having a great time doing it! I live in South Pasadena, California with my husband Rick, our 4 year old son Miles, and our cat Dave. The daily flow of creative people provides Miles with many fantastic influences in his life! a little something funny... Chris: Hey Heather...are there any reps that stand out and might be a good match for me? Heather: Are you looking for West Coast or does it matter??! Chris: To me it doesn't matter which coast they are on, although I would think that a west coast rep could get me more work with the proximity and all (tight budgets and travel). Heather: Deb Schwartz @ ds reps is one of our faves based out of LA. she may have maxed out her roster but she's worth checking out. Chris: I really love Deb Schwartz and would love to get on her roster. Any tips for getting her to actually look at my email? Heather: Just tell her the bitches at w+k said to!! So, here are I am, asking Deb Schwartz to look at my work and let me know what she thinks. I promise not to talk to you in third person in our next email. Here's some of my work: http://hornbeckerphoto.com -We are based in California and NYC. Our apartment in Chelsea provides the opportunity to be in New York more often, and for our West Coast photographers to be local to NY. |
